Crónica del tour a las islas Salvajes de junio de 2011 (ENGLISH VERSION)


El pasado fin de semana realizamos un nuevo tour de seawatching a las islas Salvajes, este año la novedad es que hemos navegado durante el mes de junio, fechas idóneas para la observación de aves marinas pelágicas nidificantes en los archipiélagos macaronésicos. A continuación mostramos un pequeño resumen de las observaciones realizadas.

Jueves 9 de junio de 2011. Navegación Tenerife a Salvaje Grande.

Zarpamos desde el puerto de Santa Cruz de Tenerife a las 6:00 h. y partir de las 8:00 h. cuando nos encontrábamos a la altura de los Roques de Anaga comenzamos a observar aves marinas.
Realizamos un buen número de observaciones hasta las 21:00 h. cuando se produjo la puesta de sol a unas 20 millas náuticas al sur del islote de Salvaje Grande.

Pardela cenicienta Calonetris diomedea..... algo más de 200 exx.
Petrel de Bulwer Bulweria bulwerii..... 31 exx.
Paiño pechialbo Pelagodroma marina..... 6 exx.
Charrán común Sterna hirundo..... 1 ex.
Gaviota patiamarilla Larus michahellis..... 25 exx. aprox.

Otra fauna de interés:
Delfín común Delphinus delphis..... 2 exx.

Viernes 10 de junio de 2011. Visita a Salvaje Grande.

Bahía Das Cagarras en Salvaje Grande.

Después de una larga travesía de unas 20 horas llegamos a la bahía Das Cagarras donde fondeamos y pasamos la noche escuchando el reclamos de las pardelas cenicientas, paiños de Madeira y pardelas chicas.
Al amanecer pudimos disfrutar del vuelo de varios charranes comunes y pardelas que salían y entraban alas huras, hecho que solo tiene lugar en esta recóndita isla. Tras desayunar en nuestra embarcación desembarcamos para pasar el día en tierra y rea
lizamos una ruta a pie por la isla en compañía de Lourenço, el vigilante de la Naturaleza del Parque Natural Da Madeira encargado de la vigilancia de la isla.

Pardela cenicienta Calonetris diomedea, se observarón varios centenares de nidos ocupados por adultos incubando. Además de algo más de un millar de aves volando al atardecer entorno a la bahia Das Cagarras.

Centenares de pardelas volando al atardecer en las próximidades de la Bahia Das Cagarras.

Pardela chica Puffinus baroli, se escucharon alrededor de 10 ejemplares la noche del 9 de junio.
Petrel de Bulwer Bulweria bulwerii, pudimos observar varios ejemplares incubando en sus colonias de crias bajo acumulos de piedra.
Paiño de Madeira Oceanodroma castro, localizamos el cadáver de un ejemplar en las cercanías de una de las colonias de cría que estudian biólogos de la Universidad de Lisboa.
Rabijunco etéreo Phaethon aethereus, observamos un ejemplar adulto en vuelo en la bahía Das Gallinas.
Charrán común Sterna hirundo, se observaron varios ejemplares volando entorno al islote.
Gaviota patiamarilla Larus michahellis, se observaron entorno a 20 ejemplares volando en diversos puntos de la isla. Además de 2 pollos volantones correteando por los llanos del interior del islote.
Vencejo común Apus apus, se observan un mínimo de cuatro ejemplares volando junto a golondrinas y aviones.
Bisbita caminero Anthus berthelotii, es la única ave terrestre nidificante en la isla, se observaron varios ejemplares adultos y jóvenes tantos en los llanos del interior como en la franja costera en la bajamar, donde se alimentaban de invertebrados marinos.
Avión común Delichon urbicum, se observa alrededor de 75 ejemplares volando en diferentes puntos de la isla.
Golondrina común Hirundo rustica, junto al mayor grupo de aviones comunes, unos 40 ejemplares, observamos tres golondrinas.

Sábado 11 de junio de 2011.
Navegación desde Salvaje Grande a Salvaje Pequeña.
Entorno a las 10:00 h. partimos rumbo a Salvaje Pequeña con el objetivo de buscar nuevas especies de aves marinas.
Pardela cenicienta Calonetris diomedea..... algo más de 300 ejemplares.

Petrel de Bulwer Bulweria bulwerii..... 16 exx.
Paiño pechialbo Pelagodroma marina..... 15 exx.
Charrán común Sterna hirundo..... 1 ex.
Gaviota patiamarilla Larus michahellis..... 3 exx.

Otra fauna de interés.
Delfín mular Tursiops truncatus..... aprox. 12 exx. navegando junto al barco.

Navegación entorna a Salvaje pequeña y Salvajita.
Por motivo de conservación y con el fin de evitar molestias a la avifauna nidificantes no se fondeo ni visito el islote de Salvajes pequeña, tal y como nos indico la Oficina de Gestión del Parque Natural Da Madeira, órgano responsable de la conservación del Archipiélago.
Pardela cenicienta Calonetris diomedea, se observan varios ejemplares volando en las proximidades del islote.
Paiño pechialbo Pelagodroma marina, se observo un grupo de tres ejemplares volando amenos de una milla de Salvaje Pequeña.

Charrán común Sterna hirundo, se observan varios ejemplares volando entorno al islote, algunos de ellos transportando alimento. Se puede ver gran un revuelo de un grupo de entorno a 30 aves al ser sobrevolados por gaviotas en la vertiente suroeste.
Charrán rosado Sterna dougalli, un ejemplar en vuelo en la vertiente sur.
Charrán sombrío Sterna fuscata, se observa un ejemplar volando junto a otros charranes sobre una baja en los rompientes al sur de Salvaje Pequeña.
Gaviota patiamarilla Larus michahellis, varios ejemplares volando entorna a la isla.
Zarapito trinador Numenius phaeopus, dos ejemplares en vuelo en las bajas al este del islote.
Vuelvepiedras Arenaria interpres, tres ejemplares volando en las zonas de bajas del este.

Navegación de Salvaje Pequeña al sur 30 millas.
A las 16:00 h. partimos desde Salvaje Pequeña rumbo sur dirección a la isla de Tenerife, permanecimos observando aves hasta las 21:00 h., momento en el que ya no disponíamos de luz suficiente.
Pardela cenicienta Calonetris diomedea, se observaron alrededor de 400 aves en vuelo.

ENGLISH VERSION ----------------------------------------

Between the 9th and the 12th of june 2011, we made a new seawatching trip to Salvages Islands (Ilhas Selvagens, Portuguese islands placed about 100 miles north of Canary Islands, and about 200 miles south of Madeira. This year the we´ve done the trip in june, the perfect date to observe breeding pelagic seabirds in the macaronesian archipelagos. Next we present a short summary of the observations we did in those four days of navigation.


Thursday, 9th of june 2011. Navigation Tenerife to Salvaje Grande.

We set sail from Santa Cruz de Tenerife´s harbour at 6:00 hrs. and at 8:00 hrs. we were near Anaga´s islets were we started to observe seabirds.

The number of observations made were satisfactory until 21:00, when the sunset at 20 nautical miles south of Salvaje Grande.


Cory's Shearwater Calonetris diomedea..... circa 200 specimen.

Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii..... 31 specimen.

White-faced Storm-Petrel Pelagodroma marina..... 6 specimen.

Common Tern Sterna hirundo..... 1 specimen.

Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis..... circa 25 specimen.

Cetaceans:

Common dolphin Delphinus delphis..... 2 specimen.


Friday, 10th of june 2011. Visit to Salvaje Grande.

After the crossing of 20 hours we arrived to Cagarra´s Bay, were we anchored and spent the night listening to the calling of the Cory´s Shearwaters, Band-rumped Storm-Petrels and Little Shearwaters.

At sunrise we could enjoyed with the Common Tern´s and Cory´s Shearwater´s flight getting in and out of their nest, something that it can only be seen in this remote island. After having breakfast in the sailing boat, we disembarked and made a trekking around the island with Lourenço, the Madeira Natural Park ranger in charge of the vigilance of the island.


Cory´s Shearwater Calonetris diomedea, several hundred nests were observed occupied ny adults incubating. Apart from several thousands of birds flying at sunset in Cagarra´s Bay surroundings.

Little Shearwater Puffinus baroli, about 10 specimen were heard at night the 9th of june.

Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii, several specimen were observed and heard incubating under stone piles.

Band-rumped Storm-Petrels Oceanodroma castro, a carcass is found in the surroundings of the breeding colonies that are being studied by biologist of the Univesrsity of Lisboa.

Red-billed Tropicbird Phaethon aethereus, one adult observed in flight at Gallina´s Bay.

Common Tern Sterna hirundo, several specimen were observed flying arround the island.

Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis, about 20 birds were seen flying at different locations of the island, as well as 2 chicks running around the interior plains.

Common Swift Apus apus, at least 4 birds were seen flying together with Common House Martins and Bar Swallows.

Berthelot's Pipit Anthus berthelotii, is the only land bird nesting in the island. Several birds were observed both adults and youngers, in the interior plains as well as in the coastal range during low tide, where they feed themselves with marine invertebrates.

Common House Martin Delichon urbicum, about 75 birds were observed fliying at different locations.

Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica, three birds were seen next to the biggest group of Common House Martins.


Saturday 11th of june 2011. Navigation from Salvaje Grande to Salvaje Pequeña islet.

At around 10:00 hrs. we left direction Salvaje Pequeña with the aim of search for new species of seabirds. This is what we saw:


Cory´s Shearwater Calonetris diomedea..... more than 300 specimen.

Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii..... 16 specimen.

White-faced Storm-Petrel Pelagodroma marina..... 15 specimen.

Common Tern Sterna hirundo..... 1 specimen.

Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis..... 3 specimen.


Cetaceans:

Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus..... circa 12 specimen.


Navigation in the surroundings of Salvaje pequeña and Salvajita islets.

With the purpose of conservating and with the aim of avoid bothering to the nesting bird life we didn´t disembarked at Salvaje pequeña islet, as expressed by the managment office of Parque Natural de Madeira, resposible for the conservation of the Archipelago.


Cory´s Shearwater Calonetris diomedea, several birds were observed flying in the surrondings of the islet.

White-faced Storm-Petrel Pelagodroma marina, a group of three birds were seen at less than one mile of Salvaje pequeña.

Common Tern Sterna hirundo, several birds were observed flying in the surroundings of the islet, some of them carrying food. It can be seen a group of about 30 birds with gulls in the southwest side.

Roseate tern Sterna dougalli, one bird flying in the south side.

Sooty Tern Sterna fuscata, one bird observed flying next to other terns over a shallow in the shoal at south of the islet.

Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis, several birds were observed flying in the surroundings of the islet.

Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus, two birds flying heading to the shoal in ter east of the islet.

Ruddy Turnstone Arenaria interpres, three birds flying over the lowlands Eastern the islet.


Navigation from Salvaje Pequeña to 30 miles south.

At 16:00 hrs. we left for Tenerife, and kept watching seabirds untill 21:00, the momento that we enjoyed the sunset.


Cory´s Shearwater Calonetris diomedea, about 400 birds were observed flying.

Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii..... 106 specimen.

White-faced Storm-Petrel Pelagodroma marina..... 37 specimen.

Common Tern Sterna hirundo..... 2 specimen.

Sunday 12th of june 2011. Arrival into the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
